Hello! 🌿
We are officially in Spring (Hallelujah!)!!💐🌷🌈🐰🐇 …And I’m officially sharing a small rant. (Slash question.)
Yesterday evening, I went for a short jaunt through the woods nearby my house… Does anyone else know what I mean when I say I’m struggling with beautiful nature walks which are puncuated by really strong smelling… humans(!!!)??
What I mean by this is, specifically, the really overpowering, synthetic scents that people are wearing. I don’t know what’s going on – I don’t know if people are just very desensitised these days, but the situation is this: a walker is walking towards me, in the opposite direction on a woodland path. It’s all perfectly pleasant, we have a lovely walking ‘hello’ and then I am left subtly holding my breath for a few seconds afterwards. To clarify, they don’t smell BAD in the sense of being unwashed (on the contrary, it’s arguably a testament to how careful people are to apply these well-intended perfume substances, so good on them!), it’s just that when you are used to a more natural lifestyle, it can be quite confronting to experience a sudden waft of ultra-synthetic (usually very strong) washing powder, or deodorant or perfume, or some other chemical smorgasbord.
I think people are frequently applying too much, and that the things they are applying are not very gentle or nature-aligned. (There is of course a ton of research on how dangerous various chemicals can be for our health, meanwhile, which I won’t get into in this particular rant.)
… And I know I sound really bonkers now, but I sometimes imagine myself as an animal in these woods (maybe I live in a hole in the ground, or I’ve made a little den, or I balance in a tree nest…); humans must be such strange-smelling things which rush by all in a lumbering whoosh, disrupting your whole world and your hyper sensitive nose. (I mean, my nose is highly sensitive, but those of deer and foxes and insects are (I presume) on another level!)
What can be done?
WELL…
