Description
A multi-use feast for dry, curly hair or irritated scalps in need of TLC. Carefully chosen organic plant butters, seed oils, cooling herbs & calming flower essences combine for maximum nourishment. Use as soothing, softening, deeply pampering treat (for scalp and hair) or as a daily anti-frizz smoothing balm for better-defined curls.
Green tea, rice bran, cocoa butter, walnut butter, shea butter, rice bran, macadamia, black seed, andiroba, baobab…
…This blend is so rich (in plant-derived nutrients), your dry/frazzled locks can’t help but submit to its powerful persuasion. It’s specially designed for those times at which your hair is screaming out for repair or pampering due to dryness, chemical damage or over-use of heat, and is also perfect for taming frizz.
What to do with it:
Each use only requires a tiny amount of product (just a light touch is recommended), so the jar will last a long time.
My favourite way to use the butter is to scrunch a very small amount into the bottom two thirds of my hair while it’s still damp from washing. (I use the equivalent of a ten pence piece – my curly hair is hip-length when stretched straight, so you may want to use more or less depending on your hair length.) I also add a small amount of the Shine Elixir Hair Food at this stage.
My hair then dries with defined curls and less frizz, and the butter even gives a tiny amount of hold without any ‘crunchiness’, leaving it soft and natural rather than overloaded with product.
Where needed, between washes (when my hair is dry), I like to stroke in the tiniest of smears of the butter through the ends, to add some definition to my mane(/halo) while still allowing movement and softness. I absolutely love the scent.
As you can gather, there are few different ways to use the curl butter as a mask – from leaving it in for 3 minutes before shampooing or for 30 minutes while you relax in the bath, to (if you are really inneed of some proper follicular restoration!) leaving it on to work its magic while you sleep. I’m clearly a big fan of things happening overnight (I’m sure I should write some kind of book on ‘the 4 hour work week’ but for beauty, and, er, an 8-hour version) and,
really, I don’t see why my hair should miss out on the fun. This stuff is a perfect moisture injection however you prefer to use it.
You may notice…
This jar-ful is blended with the exact same combination of essential oils as in my Tea & Olive Lip & Wonderbalm (rosemary, lavender and peppermint) as I simply love it so much; it’s refreshing, cooling, minty, faintly medicinal, floral and relaxing all at once. Such a dreamy way to fall asleep (if you so choose to leave it on overnight).
Key ingredients/benefits:
GREEN TEA SEED OIL: Packed with antioxidants, phytochemicals, caffeine, magnesium & more, this moisturises and restores the hair and adds shine. The oil from the seeds of green tea is a traditional beauty (not-so)-secret in much of Asia.
ORGANIC UNREFINED COCOA BUTTER: Cocoa butter is a pure, edible vegetable fat extracted from the cacao bean (it’s a by product of chocolate; both are full of antioxidants), and works well against frizz and dryness; perfect for a deep treatment.
ORGANIC WALNUT BUTTER: Intensely rich in omega-3 and excellent at hydrating dry hair. The Oleic acid content, good for cell-regeneration, effectively smooths and calms damaged hair.
ORGANIC UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER: Highly hydrating and nourishing, shea butter adds shine and restores health to fragile hair and scalp. It’s high in linoleic acid, stearic acid and oleic acid, absorbs well and helps detangle chaotic strands.
RICE BRAN: Rich in natural plant sterols and antioxidant gamma oryzanol, rice bran is another way of applying rich plant nutrition to your hair, and much loved by Japanese women, who apply it directly for smoothness and shine.
MACADAMIA OIL: cold pressed from the nuts of the Macadamia nut tree, non-greasy and one of the highest sources of fatty acids; excellent for nourishment and repair.
BAOBAB OIL: this little gem adds shine and penetrates the hair strands beautifully, adding suppleness and reducing the effects of environmental damage.
BLACK SEED OIL: a natural hair tonic traditionally used to promote hair growth. It’s naturally anti-fungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial; perfect prevention/help for scalp conditions. A snippet of plant-knowledge wisdom if ever there was one: ‘Use the Black Seed for indeed, it is a cure for all diseases except death.’
ANDIROBA: highly emolliant, anti-inflammatory, full of omega-3 fatty acids; wonderful conditioning for all and especially for curly/black/Afro-Caribbean hair types, moisturising without greasiness.
LAVENDER, ROSEMARY & PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OILS: Rosemary oil helps to stimulate follicles, making hair grow longer and stronger, and is good for dry or flaky scalps, as is peppermint, which can control the secretion of sebum (balancing both dryness and greasiness) and cool the scalp. Lavender is antibacterial, calming, helps control dandruff, conditions the hair and adds shine.
Uses & Directions:
For dry, damaged or brittle hair. Massage a small amount (about a tablespoon or less depending on your hair length) into the scalp and through the ends of towel-dried hair. Leave for 3 minutes in the shower before washing away, or as a longer treatment.
If using as an overnight intensive mask, remember to wrap your hair in a towel or T-shirt to protect your pillow cases and keep the natural oils away from your face.
To remove hair oil masks, shampoo very thoroughly to make sure your hair is thoroughly cleansed. No need to use conditioner afterwards.
Being so natural, please bear in mind that the organic butters & coconut oil in this product may form tiny crystals and a slightly grainy texture if exposed to strong changes in temperature during transit. This doesn’t affect the quality of the product even remotely, and any possible crystals will melt away upon rubbing into your skin. (You can also choose to melt and re-set your jar if you prefer: see more about this here.)

I got the curl butter from Ella at a vegan market. I have thick wavy hair that is super prone to frizziness. I tried the butter as a hair mask (i left it on for around half an hour) and my hair has never felt so soft in my life. It really helped with the frizziness too. What’s really interesting is that it doesn’t seem to be too heavy on the hair as my hair didn’t get oily for the next 3 days (I usually have to wash my hair every 2 days). I highly recommend this! It doesn’t compare to any product from the high street i have tried.

I use this faaabulous Curl Butter pre-wash when my hair is dry. Then, rinse it off and shampoo as normal. No conditioner necessary. I quite enjoyed experimenting to see what worked best for my hair; I tried using it post-shower when my hair was still wet but I think it’s more of a leave-in condition i.e, you need to rinse it out. Anyway, it’s a brilliant product, leaves my long, curly hair feeling smooth and hydrated, and smells good too!
Ella, you’ve got a talent! Can’t wait to slowly try all your products 🙂

I’m absolutely obsessed with the curl butter! I have very long wavy hair which I sometimes like to curl overnight. I tried using the curl butter in my heatless curling routine (slightly wetting my hair, adding a thin coating of the curl butter, braiding my hair and sleeping on it) and it worked very well. My hair was ultra nourished and glossy and the curls definently stayed longer than with water only!
I also love using the curl butter as a regular hair oil. You just need the tiniest amount to tame frizzyness. I like to alternate it with the Leafology Shine Elixer Hair Food to have a change of scent. And I like the butter more when my hair is on the dryer side.
The smell is amazing. When you smell it in the jar you kinda get hit in the face by peppermint. But once applied it balances out very nicely with the lavender and rosemary. Ella knows what she’s doing 😉
Also, my boyfriend absolutely loves this as a hair pomade for his short hair!
